Uses: sprinkled on salads or pasta, adds a very nice citrus touch. It is also an ingredient in mixtures such as zaatar.
sumac or sumac (sumaq) is a berry that grows in the eastern Mediterranean, where it has been known since, at least, the time of the Romans, when it was already used as a substitute for lemon, for its slightly acidic flavor. Very present in the cuisine of the Middle East, it is consumed ground both in salads and pasta, lamb or chicken dishes (it is used sprinkled on top). It is also one of the essential components of the zaatar (za'atar).
What does sumac taste like?
It has a soft and very pleasant citrus touch, which adds a touch of freshness to salads and dishes in general. As we always insist, the ideal is to try it alone, to get to know it and thus know better in what quantity and in what recipes to use it.
